REASON RECORD Announced

Record Logo

Well the PropHeads announced it…. http://www.propellerheads.se/products/record/

There’s a lot of information there. Watching the video is probably the quickest way to get an overview of what it is.

The blog Waveformless (http://waveformless.blogspot.com/) had an initial take:

…my initial thoughts are, this is going to be a tough sell. It looks like it will mainly appeal to people using Reason. But with how long Propellerheads left Reason crippled without audio recording capabilieis, most people using it seriously already use it with Rewire connected to another DAW such as Logic or Live. I’m not seeing anything here that would make most people want to abandon those and learn a new DAW. The Line-6 and SSL-modeled mixing channels are nice, but probably not enough for most people to switch. There’s not much info yet, though, so I freely admit I could be totally wrong. I just think to compete in a DAW market with multiple, well-established programs, they really needed to offer something revolutionary, and at first glance, this doesn’t appear to be it. That interface looks like a cluttered mess, too, in my opinion. So what do you think? …

I think he has a couple of points, but is too harsh. He’s got a point that most people who use REASON and want to record audio already use ReWire and a DAW. (And RECORD IS a full fledged DAW no matter what the Propheads claim.) But there are alot of folks who don’t (and there are all the new customers too). I think the integration with REASON and familiar workflow for REASON users PLUS the price ($149 for REASON owners) makes this look damn attractive to them. And there are ALOT of them.

Still it is a DAW and there is stuff to learn. (More to learn than GarageBand, but less than LOGIC or DP I guess?) But there is a learning curve with everything. And if the Propheads really have made this scaleable (“As complex or as simple as you like…”), then I think they have a winner.  More photos from their site (http://www.propellerheads.se/products/record/) below.

Oh and they are looking for Beta testers too.

I have used Reason for many years with Cubase as my DAW. Despite this I don’t really like Cubase and find it somewhat annoying to use and it does crash (at least on my Mac) at fairly regular intervals. So although I can’t imagine myself finishing any tracks without the use of certain plug-ins (in Cubase or Peak) if the Record interface and work flows are like Reason it will, in my eyes, make the whole experience easier, more intuitive and generally more pleasant. Let’s see what happens, although I for one will definitely buy it, even if I don’t end up using it after a while.

    • I agree 100% on all counts.

I too will definitely buy it and probably take some time getting into it. Unless of course the workflow just “opens up” using REASON in some really intuitive fashion. (Then maybe RECORD won’t take so long to “get into”. :-) ) I think there are a lot of folks out there in your same boat: Using a DAW simply to record audio with Reason (and apply some choice effects). Seems pretty heavy handed for such a simple task, so I think the PropHeads have perhaps hit this one just right.

I always thought they should have developed an audio recorder as a plug-in or rack module and sold it as an option for folks who needed it. Someting simple like a 2 track DAT-ish deck for the rack or some sort of 8 track ADAT-ish faux module. $69 for the lot. That way if someone wanted audio recording, they could buy it. If they aren’t interested, they wouldn’t have to. Would be sweet if it accepted VST/AU plugins too (for mastering purposes mostly).

Speaking of: Does RECORD accept plugins? My guess is that it does not as that would violate REASON’S closed system philosophy. Too bad, but it does make tech support and development easier I bet.

I’m traveling at the moment (on a much much anticipated week with family), and I find that is when I really use REASON. I take it, my macbook, a small controller (usually an M-Audio Oxygen 8 but this time I’m trying a Korg nanoKey), and some ReFills and loops with me. This is a GREAT light-weight set up for composition on the road. It’s also somewhat freeing because I am forced into a limited palette (relative to my home gear), and that forces me to focus. (So far, try as I might, I have not been able to impose upon myself the Discipline of Fewer Options when I am at home base….)

Cheers and thanks for the comments.

Dear Reason guys, I am pleased that after years of messing with various programs and limitations to guys like myself who just want to get to the point of laying a track down, you have finally brought out a terrific product that I cannot wait to purchase, further I am going to make mention of this new program in my dj manual as I can see that not only will live acts enjoy its ease, but so will dj’s and I would really like your consideration in permitting me the opportunity to test it before it’s release and as I am a registered owner of Reason (I love) but this is complete and total for me and at the end of the day thats what counts. if you decide to permit me the honor of testing it, please bill me for the complete and total version upon public release, if not, I will still print in my manual this is something to definitely check out.

    Regards

    Dj Gregrrr

  2. I have signed up for the beta testing, and will be interested to see how well the integration
with Reason functions. I have always valued Reason very highly in my own workflow because of its great stability, and rewiring to Cubase 4 gives me the audio capabilities I require in tandem with the excellent instruments in Reason 4. Cubase definitely has bugs and annoyances, and I don’t think it is as stable as Reason. That said, there are some excellent VST plugins like Kjaerhus MPL-1 Pro which I will probably continue to use for mastering whatever new software packages I buy in the future.
From the information I have ingested so far about Record, it seems like a bargain; the Line 6 guitar and bass processing make the package worth the money without all the other features in my opinion. I will certainly be giving Record serious consideration, not to mention a thorough testing if given the opportunity. Another benefit will be that Reason with Record could solve cross-platform issues between PC / Mac. I personally don’t own a Mac because they are very expensive, and thus I don’t have a strong working knowledge or familiarity with Logic. This program will be well worth considering in light of these facts, I reckon!

  3. I use reason to do all my music and Protools Le 8 as my Daw. My interest is to buy record just cause it has the SSL intergrated but can I rewire record to protools? I already use SSL plugins but the more I use LATENCY kicks in (I HATE THAT)So, can I use RECORD as a rewire to Pro tools?

    Thanks

    • According to info in the latest Computer Music Magazine, you can rewire Record to other DAWS. Also, their next issue (on sale July 2 in the UK) will feature a first-hand overview of the RECORD & REASON combo apparently…

I have been Beta testing RECORD and it is just awesome. Very stable and great on the CPU. I do find everything a bit cluttered at the moment but that is just a slight downside on what is going to be a fantastic program.
A big thumbs up to the PROP guys. :-)

    • I gotta admit, the more I use it, the more I like it. I’ve gotten used to the interface more or less. Using the function keys is absolutely essential to a good user experience.

  4. Reason has been the answer for many of us producers who always have had the dream of having racks filled with gear like major multi-million dollar studios! I’ve been using reason 3.0 for four years and haven’t brought myself to upgrade to 4! I just love 3! I. like others, cannot wait till Sept. 9 to purchase Record. i expect it to really aide in the whole rewire process. With the annoying setup with Pro Tools of having to create three tracks just record and play one sound! That will be my main reason (forgive the pun) for buying record. Plus, I have always wanted a SSL board! Now I will have one for 149 bucks! cant beat that!
