This is so cool…

vimeo DirektAPPARATI EFFIMERI Tetragram for Enlargment

It’s a building-scale (actually castle-scale) projection mapping effort. Really, really cool visual eye-candy. If you don’t have time to watch the whole thing, fast forward about 4 minutes in and watch the building “deconstruct” itself. Wild.

(Originally saw this over at Peter Kirn’s CDM.)

Streetwise Opera’s My Secret Heart (by way of CDM)

This is just a very quick post as I am rather pressed for time this morning. This came to my attention via Peter Kirn’s excellent site Create Digital Motion. I think Peter hits it bang on in his opening paragraph:

Perhaps it’s the church setting for the installation, or the strains of 17th-Century choral composition by Allegri. But Streetwise Opera’s My Secret Heart, binding together reactive visuals and post-Minimalist musical strains, has the feeling of a 21st Century passion play, a digital devotional piece.

Here is an excerpt. (The small size does not do it justice. You might want to go directly to Vimeo to check it out.)

I strongly encourage you to check out Peter’s site for more details then head over to Streetwise Opera’s site for even more info.

Quick Prop: Xavier Chassaing (by way of CDM)

This is just to call your attention to this gorgeous visual from Xavier Chassaing.

SCINTILLATION from Xavier Chassaing on Vimeo.

I came across this on Peter Kirn’s excellent blog CreateDigitalMotion. You need to go there to get the really fascinating story of how this was put together using (among other things) 35,000 seperate photographs…

Synplant: Let’s “grow” some sounds….

CDM featured a mention of Sonic Charge’s new generative softsynth Synplant. It has a very different sort of interface:

This will take some getting used to....

This will take some getting used to....

Peter Kirn over at CDM has been working with it and says the sound demos on the site “don’t do the product justice.” They do sound a mite “conventional” to my ears given the promise of the approach, but choosing sound demos for a product is tricky business…you don’t want to be too far out yet you want to give a feeling for the possibilities within the product.

There is a 3 week demo available from Sonic Charge’s site. The demo policy is pretty cool:

“For evaluation purposes you are allowed to try Synplant for up to three weeks with full functionality. The trial begins the first time you open Synplant in your host sequencer. Synplant then only subtracts weeks from the trial time when you actually use it.

I am interpreting that last sentence to mean that you get 3 weeks of time using the plug-in as opposed to just three weeks of time from first launch. That is fairly cool (and very generous) if I am interpreting it correctly. I wish more developers would give you a certain amount of time of use of the plugin as opposed to a “clock” that runs continuously.

The allure of ‘Processing’. Or why isn’t there more time in the day?

Due largely to Peter Kirn’s occasional series of articles over at Create Digital Motion (a daily stop of mine by the way and highly recommended), I’ve had my eye on taking the plunge into learning about Processing. For those unfamiliar, Processing is an open source programming language and environment for programming images, animation, and interactions. It allows you to create your own code to realize computer generated visuals — digital art and video if you choose — for use in your own projects. The programming language is supposed to be fairly accessible to non-programmers…

Today Kirn featured an article about Glen Marshall’s new Processor realized video Metamorphosis. Totally generative and set to Boards of Canada track Corsair from Geogaddi, it is beautiful. And according to Kirn, Glen considers himself a “noob programmer”.

“i can just about understand my own source code, let alone others, i’m still a noob programmer believe it or not.”

I might have to go with the “or not”. Glen’s newest creation is absolutely, positively, unquestionably beautiful. And it is all generative. He programmed the parameters then let it run free. A M A Z I N G.

And it is precisely this type of thing that makes me very very curious about Processing and making the plunge to get to grips with it. Which brings me back to to the last half of my title…
